I would like everyone to know that I don’t really care about Google Wave. Many people I know are dying to get an invitation to the service, but I don’t see anything that fills me with the same fervor.
I do have one comment though. Google says that Wave is a new form of email. I don’t think so. I think it’s some hybridization of message boards and chat rooms. There’s the live-typing element, which moves it toward methods of communication like instant messaging and chat rooms. But the threaded messaging doesn’t make it seem like email to me. (Granted, I don’t use email except as a form of notification. I have a feeling I’m in the minority.) The latter element reminds me of message boards, where you have much the same activity: Someone posts about a certain subject, and people reply, occasionally working off other people’s words.
I suppose mailing lists never clicked for me. Perhaps I just want to see Wave communities pop up. In any case, I won’t care about Wave until it becomes ubiquitous.
